Two Films By Marguerite Duras
In 1930s Calcutta, Anne-Marie Stretter (Delphine Seyrig) dealt with the ennui of being a French diplomat's wife with a string of affairs, but the many lovers won't suffice to quell the emptiness within. Marguerite Duras' "India Song" (1975) also stars Michel Lonsdale, Claude Mann, Vernon Dobtcheff. And, in Duras' "Baxter, Vera Baxter" (1977), the titular heroine (Claudine Gabay) confides to a fellow seaside resort guest (Seyrig) of the exploitation suffered at the hands of her ex-husband (Gerard Depardieu). 3 1/2 hrs.
