American Football - American Football [Green LP] Find at an Indie Store

2005 reissue LP on green vinyl. Jazz influences took their effect on the shortly lived emo band American Football. All through their self-titled 1999 debut album, you can hear jazz rhythm and timing while the instruments trade off solos like they are talking to each other. Yet, blended with true emo lyrics and musical stylings, the jazz flavoring makes for a one-of-a-kind experience. All of it is due to the understated creative genius of drummer and trumpeter Steve Lamos, guitarish and organ player Steve Holmes and guitarist, bassist and vocalist Mike Kinsella. As a band, American Football disolved into the history books almost as soon as their album was released, but its success continues to grow in their absence. Fan requests for vinyl pressings were eventually acted upon, and several early editions sold out almost instantly. The now standard nationwide reissue on green vinyl remains in print.

Alvvays - Antisocialites [Limited Edition Yellow LP] Find at an Indie Store

Alvvays is due to release its much-anticipated second full-length, Antisocialites, this September. Bolstered by singles such as “Archie, Marry Me,” and an extensive touring schedule that included multiple full U.S. and European runs, along with performances at Coachella, Glastonbury, and Reading/Leeds (plus Lollapalooza to come this August), the record's word-of-mouth success has translated into Soundscans of over 33K and a combined Spotify play count of more than 30 million streams. Antisocialites is set to carry the band to new heights, with Molly Rankin's distinctive vocals and erudite lyrics taking center stage against a kaleidoscopic backdrop of pop, shoegaze, punk, and some brand new tricks befitting a band that sounds wise beyond its years.

Julia Jacklin - Crushing [Limited Edition Green LP] Find at an Indie Store

Limited 180gm colored vinyl LP pressing. The second full-length album from Australian singer/songwriter Julia Jacklin, Crushing embodies every possible meaning of it's title word. It's an album formed from sheer intensity of feeling, an in-the-moment narrative of heartbreak and infatuation. And with her storytelling centered on bodies and crossed boundaries and smothering closeness, Crushing reveals how our physical experience of the world shapes and sometimes distorts our inner lives. The follow-up to her 2016 debut Don't Let the Kids Win, Crushing finds Jacklin continually acknowledging what's expected of her, then gracefully rejecting those expectations. As a result, the album invites self-examination and a possible shift in the listener's way of getting around the world - an effect that has everything to do with Jacklin's openness about her own experience.

Jay Som - Anak Ko [Color LP] Find at an Indie Store

Vinyl LP pressing. After the breakout success of Jay Som's 2017 debut album, Everybody Works, the band's songwriter, producer, and creative force Melina Duterte spent the next few years taking advantage of all the opportunities her unexpected success suddenly offered her. She took Jay Som on the road, performing with the likes of Mitski, Japanese Breakfast, Paramore, Alvvays and more across multiple US and European tours. She made appearances at various high-profile festivals, including Primavera Sound, Bonnaroo, Sasquatch, and many more. She even found time to sneak in a collaborate EP, Nothing's Changed, with like-minded solo artist Justus Proffit. When it was time to make Jay Som's second album, Duterte relocated from her hometown roots in California's Bay Area to Los Angeles and started writing. The result, Anak Ko, is some of Duterte's strongest work to date. Translating to "my child" in English, Anak Ko, features sweeping, shoegazey guitars ("Superbike"), delicate string & pedal steel arrangements ("Nighttime Drive," "Get Well"), and incredible production that showcases Duterte's evolving skills in the studio ("Anak Ko"). Anak Ko presents an exciting glimpse into Duterte's creative process and solidifies her undeniable progression as one of 2019's strongest and gifted songwriters.

Limited seafoam colored vinyl LP pressing comes packaged in wide spine jacket with printed inner sleeve. Includes digital download. No Dream is the fourth full-length from Jeff Rosenstock. It comes at a time of unparalleled chaos and confusion, division and despair, the depths of which would have been impossible to predict when much of it was being written over the course of the last few years. And yet the record feels prescient, unexpectedly and uniquely suited for this moment. After building a devoted cult following with the acerbic ska-punk of the Arrogant Sons of Bitches, the DIY heroics of Bomb the Music Industry!, and three increasingly celebrated solo albums, No Dream arrives with an entirely new set of expectations in an entirely new era.

Laura Jane Grace - Stay Alive [Lapis Lazuli Blue LP] Find at an Indie Store

Laura Jane Grace wasn't planning on making a solo record this year. In fact, she was planning on making a record with Against Me!, the band she's fronted for the past 23 years. But clearly, nothing went according to plan this year. "We came home from the Against Me! Tour we were on in March, and right before we left, we had been in the studio working on songs, and I had been working on them for months prior," says Grace. As she sat at home, all of her tours canceled, and the members of Against Me!-as well as her other band Laura Jane Grace & The Devouring Mothers-spread across the country, she was left with a batch of songs and no band to record them with. So, Grace got to work. She picked up the phone and called Electrical Audio, the iconic studio in her adopted hometown of Chicago, Illinois, to ask if she could make a record with famed engineer Steve Albini. The goal was to go in and document these songs exactly as she'd been playing them in her home, straight to analog tape. When she hung up the phone, she had four days booked. The result of the session at Electrical Audio is Stay Alive, a record that doesn't just embody that title, it serves as the guiding principle behind it's creations. Across the 14 songs that comprise Stay Alive, Grace takes all her pent-up fears, anger, and anxiety and releases it, like an olive branch to the weary listeners who are feeling those exact same ways.

Oceanator - Things I Never Said [Orange Swirl LP] Find at an Indie Store

Oceanator's debut full-length, Things I Never Said, sees NYC multi-instrumentalist Elise Okusami hyperbolically equating early adulthood malaise with apocalyptic destruction. The type of anxieties that form when thoughts bottle up and stress gets the best of you. Throughout the record, allusions to intrusive thoughts and depression-induced stasis are weaved in between references to falling skies, rolling fires, and the possibility of the world literally falling apart. However, while Okusami's emotional and physical solitude makes for a resilient foe, Things I Never Said is ultimately a record about finding comfort in the face of destruction, whether it be through appreciating the little things or forming a bond with someone you can mutually confide in about mental afflictions. There's no concrete resolution to the album, but rather a vital reminder that love and friendship, both with others and herself, will always reign victorious in our darkest moments.

They program and perform intensely emotional digital music, and also once sent a slice of pizza into space. Their new album, [USA], will be released on Polyvinyl Record Co. In 2019. Since forming in the mid-2000s, Anamanaguchi have been revered as pioneers in the homemade, video game world of chiptune music: they combine a loud and fast live band with hyper-melodic squarewaves from hacked Nintendo hardware. Their earliest releases have been distributed on NES cartridges you can actually play, and in 2010 they created the official soundtrack to the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World game. In 2013, Anamanaguchi self-released the Endless Fantasy album backed by an out-of-control Kickstarter campaign that brought in $275,000, more than five times their goal. In 2016, they parodied corporate gaming culture by making a free game, including an original full-length soundtrack, titled Capsule Silence XXIV. Recently, they've collaborated on a single with the computer-generated Japanese pop star Hatsune Miku, and were the first independent artists to perform alongside her hologram on tour.

Fred Thomas - Aftering Find at an Indie Store

Fred Thomas had been making music nonstop for years when a seismic shift in his creative process happened in 2013. Something mystical opened up in the fall of that year and the prolific songwriter moved from his already emotionally open style into an unprecedentedly direct and vulnerable lyrical approach as well as new levels of detail-fixated production. The songs took on a new urgency, inspired by a feeling that life was beginning afresh while at the same time a lifetime of experiences were cementing into worlds of memory. The results of that creatively eruptive time began with 2015's critically hailed album All Are Saved, continued into the turbulent pop of 2017's Changer and now float into Aftering, a record that feels like the final chapter of an unofficial trilogy.

Just as the two before it, Aftering was produced, mixed and assembled on location in a close collaboration between Thomas and Athens, Georgia based engineer Drew Vandenberg. All cut from the same cloth, Aftering ties the knots that connect all three records. Where both All Are Saved and Changer flitted nervously between moments of jangly powerpop, electronic interludes and experimental acoustic weirdness, Aftering maps out a far more intentional arc, burning through a first act of speedy, hook-heavy guitar rock before taking a sharp, brutal dive into an abyss on the album's second half.

Modeled loosely after Neil Young's On The Beach, the nine songs here move from jumpy two minute blasts into a suite of four protracted and moody interconnected pieces. At first, Thomas' signature mesh of soaring melodies and experimental pop keeps things upbeat even when burying intense topics on songs like "Alcohol Poisoning" or in the post-election unrest of "Good Times Are Gone Again." Beginning with 8-minute fever dream "House Show, Late December," the ache that sits in the core of the album comes to the surface completely. From here guitars almost vanish from the instrumentation and the focus shifts to tightly arranged strings, ominous synths, ambient waves and spoken lyrics somewhere between poetry and desperate confession. These longer songs drift in and out of each other slowly, drowning into their own lush darkness and heavy observations on anxiety, family and emotional abuse.

Connecting all three albums to an even deeper degree, Aftering finally realizes loose threads that began on earlier records, and calls on special guests from all phases of Thomas' life. Anna Burch returns to sing on buoyant single "Altar" and longtime friend and collaborator Elliot Bergman (Wild Belle, Saturday Looks Good To Me) helps sculpt the crystalline vibe of album closer "What The Sermon Said." Newer friends show up as well, with members of Bonny Doon, Common Holly, Deadbeat Beat and other artists Thomas connected with through years of touring showing up in supporting roles over the course of the record. Wolf Eyes member and noted memelord John Olson even contributes some fried horns and electronics.

More than anything, Aftering calmly sets down the restless questioning and turmoil of the trilogy. Instead of landing on any tidy conclusion or neatly wrapping up a thesis, the album illuminates the themes of observation and acceptance that have run throughout Thomas' work for the last five years. Aftering reflects on an answerless and uncertain future, trying to make sense of it through scattered memories that flash like mental postcards. A sense of larger, universal dread refracts through these moments of searching. Ultimately, it's not the dark times or bleakness that lingers, but a sense of connection and hope that comes from trying to communicate them as honestly as possible. Aftering, like the chapters that came just before, can feel sometimes painful, but there's a clarity and beauty that's always there as well, equally bright in even the darkest moments.

The sounds of alexalone will usher you into warm, fuzzy, lonely spaces, then shock you alive with pulsing energy. But, alexalone's first full length album, ALEXALONEWORLD, isn't merely about the sound, it is an exercise in world building, and a portrait of the artist cradling and nurturing their emotions as they create, navigating labyrinths of pain as they search for exits, and hoping for a haven where they can survey the damage and regroup. ALEXALONEWORLD's gravitational center is Alex Peterson's (they/them) musical vision and authorial voice, the wayfarer through a forest of moods. Though Peterson is no stranger to performing with other musicians, as a live member of both Hovvdy and Lomelda, when alexalone were highlighted in NPR's 'The Austin 100' in 2018, Peterson was still recording music largely as a one-person band, layering and looping to generate the "big, billowing, shoe-gaze epics" praised by NPR's Stephen Thompson. The album is fueled by Peterson's passion for making music and their personal experiences facing systems of oppression. Peterson found inspiration in the worlds built by Tolkien, Murakami, absurdist graphic novelist Inio Asano, and Zelda video game designers, among other artists who manage to envision worlds where agony merges with playfulness as characters traverse metaphysical spaces. Musically, they draw inspiration from Low, Boris and Yo La Tengo, among other bands who tease out paradox through sound, and who continually seek new creative terrain. Alexalone isn't afraid of descending into dark painful places, but they are also always up for play. Like the best existentialists, they imagine Sisyphus happy.

Built up with layer upon layer of rhythmic lines, computer noises, RZA beats, and poppy vocals that sometimes sound like a Janet Jackson/Prince face-off, Alix is: old and new, vinyl and youtube, vocal chord and microkorg, gathered up and arranged with great care into a good-smelling, subtly sexy, catchy-or-die mish-mosh of sensibilities and time-warp senselessness, lightly peppered with that signature Swiftian element, but undeniably Generationals in taste. As Swift had decreed: tis a good idea to tear down and rebuild, but it s not always necessary to start from scratch.

Starfucker (STRFKR) - Ambient 1 Find at an Indie Store

STRFKR's sound has morphed over the years through variations of hyper catchy, danceable pop, but on Ambient 1 - the band's first fully instrumental album - the band has achieved something very different. For a little shy of an hour, Ambient 1 drifts through softly glowing electronic instrumentals that extract the synth core from the group's well established synth pop sound. It's patient, playful, and calming music that travels through passageways of chaos and anxiety on a journey towards healing.Upon completing work on the lo-fi dreaminess of Future Past Life, STRFKR's principal songwriter Josh Hodges found himself returning repeatedly to albums by his favorite ambient artists and minimal composers. This growing obsession with synthesis and the culture around it also concurred with the daily darkness of the pandemic and some personal disruptions. Without spending too much time thinking about what it meant, Hodges began recording ambient experiments almost daily as a way of processing these difficult emotions. Echoes of masters like Harold Budd and Brian Eno can be heard in the angelic floating of "Work Smoothly Lifetime Peace" while tracks like "Nexus" are stormy and frenetic. In some ways, Ambient 1 is unlike anything STRFKR has created before, but when completely absorbed, it makes sense why it's included under the STRFKR banner. Even at his most drony and experimental, Hodges can't escape his distinctive melodic approach. Ambient 1 strips away the familiar and the expected, exposing Hodges' signature sonic personality at a granular level.

Jay Som - Anak Ko [Cassette] Find at an Indie Store

After the breakout success of Jay Som’s 2017 debut album, Everybody Works, the band’s songwriter, producer, and creative force Melina Duterte spent the next few years taking advantage of all the opportunities her unexpected success suddenly offered her. She took Jay Som on the road, performing with the likes of Mitski, Japanese Breakfast, Paramore, Alvvays and more across multiple US and European tours. She made appearances at various high-profile festivals, including Primavera Sound, Bonnaroo, Sasquatch, and many more. She even found time to sneak in a collaborate EP, Nothing’s Changed, with like-minded solo artist Justus Proffit. When it was time to make Jay Som’s second album, Duterte relocated from her hometown roots in California’s Bay Area to Los Angeles and started writing. The result, Anak Ko, is some of Duterte’s strongest work to date. Translating to “my child” in English, Anak Ko, features sweeping, shoegazey guitars (“Superbike”), delicate string & pedal steel arrangements (“Nighttime Drive,” “Get Well”), and incredible production that showcases Duterte’s evolving skills in the studio (“Anak Ko”). Anak Ko presents an exciting glimpse into Duterte’s creative process and solidifies her undeniable progression as one of 2019's strongest and gifted songwriters.

Sonny & the Sunsets' Antenna to the Afterworld is a fast-moving record of New Wave synths and Post Punk beats. The murder of a close friend of the band led Smith to think a lot about death and life after death. Shortly after, a visit to a psychic/medium brought Smith into contact with another friend who had died. This encounter with the afterworld inspired many of the lyrics on the Sonny & the Sunsets' record. And what a strangely entertaining odyssey it turned out to be.

Alvvays is due to release its much-anticipated second full-length, Antisocialites, this September. Chicago's Mike Kinsella is the sole creative output behind Owen. From an artist who has, in the past, recorded entire albums in his childhood bedroom berating lost love and personal missteps, it's a new chapter. The end result is this record, a new extension in the lineage of Owen's music.

Of Montreal - Aureate Gloom Find at an Indie Store

“A golden despondency” is how Kevin Barnes translates the meaning behind Aureate Gloom, the title he gave of Montreal’s thirteenth full-length album. The oxymoron is one Barnes says best describes the overall state of his life and mental outlook while working on the record — penning lyrics so personal they sound like entries ripped from a journal that should be permanently kept under lock and key.

'A golden despondency' is how Kevin Barnes translates the meaning behind Aureate Gloom, the title he gave Of Montreal's thirteenth full-length album. The oxymoron is one Barnes says best describes the overall state of his life and mental outlook while working on the record - penning lyrics so personal they sound like entries ripped from a journal that should be permanently kept under lock and key. 'I was going through a very stormy period in my life and felt like I was just completely trashed,' reveals Barnes. 'I might be guilty of sharing or exposing too much of my private life, but to me the best albums are those that help people connect with an artist on a deep, human level and that do so without too much artifice or evasiveness.' Aureate Gloom was recorded directly to tape with musicians Kevin Barnes (guitar, vocals), Clayton Rychlik (drums), Bob Parins (bass), Bennett Lewis (guitar), and JoJo Glide well (keys), plus the help of engineer Drew Vandenberg. The strength of the members' musical rapport was instantly apparent. The group completed nearly a song a day and even wrote a brand new track on the spot, 'Apollyon Of Blue Room,' whose title references a supposedly haunted bedroom in a hacienda on the studio grounds. With Aureate Gloom, Of Montreal have created one of the most unflinching, confessional and starkly emotional albums in their career.

Being No One, Going Nowhere. The title of STRFKR's fourth album may seam bleak at first. But hold it in your head a minute, feel its weight, and you may recognize the phrase for what it is: a goal. In the era of the personal brand—amid the FOMO Age—it's increasingly hard to shed a stifling sense of self, or to just be in the moment that you're in. Well, consider this an invitation to get blissfully insignificant. That's what STRFKR founder Joshua Hodges aimed to do when he exiled himself to the desert to create this record, but he returned with his most significant work yet: a set of darkly glistening dance songs rife with sticky beats, earworming hooks, philosophical heft, and bittersweet beauty.

Palehound - Black Friday Find at an Indie Store

The third full-length album from Boston-based trio Palehound, Black Friday is a finespun exploration of all the forms that love can take: love between friends, love for people no longer in your life, love in the face of self-hate, love that endures through major life changes or through many tiny catastrophes. With her thoughtful narrative voice, Palehound singer/songwriter Ellen Kempner imbues each song on the album with a radical sensitivity, an unchecked depth of feeling that ultimately sparks a greater open-heartedness within the listener. Co-produced by Kempner and Gabe Wax (Beirut, Soccer Mommy), Black Friday was recorded at Panoramic House in Stinson Beach, California throughout late 2018. The trio tracked most of the songs live, which introduced a new vitality into the band's elegantly detailed sound. With Black Friday building off the emotional complexity of it's predecessor (2017's A Place I'll Always Go), Palehound hope that the album might help others to work through their own troubles in life and love of all kinds.

After nearly a decade's worth of DIY touring and writing/recording with various bands (including his collaboration with Jeff Rosenstock, Antarctigo Vespucci), Florida native Chris Farren decided to shift his focus and began writing songs under his own name. His debut solo album released in 2016, Can't Die, showcased Farren's strengths as a pop songwriter and pushed him to relocate to Los Angeles. He took his new material out on the road alone, performing solo with backing tracks and added visuals, while simultaneously developing a newfound sense of humor when it came to promoting himself online. With his sophomore album and Polyvinyl debut, Born Hot, Farren takes it a step further. Songs like "Search 4 Me" and "Love Theme from 'Born Hot'" are proof that Farren knows what it takes to write a hook, while songs like "R U Still There?" and "Floruit de Maga" showcase his strengths as a lyricist, telling stories of loss, grief, insecurity, and loneliness. And as far as the new promotional concepts... let's just say they're as hot as ever!

Mister Heavenly - Boxing The Moonlight Find at an Indie Store

“Supergroup” is a title that gets thrown around a lot, but in the case of Mister Heavenly, it’s well-deserved. The trio consists of Ryan Kattner (aka Honus Honus of Man Man), Nicholas Thorburn (The Unicorns, Islands) and Joe Plummer (The Shins, Cold War Kids, Modest Mouse). Mister Heavenly is set to make its Polyvinyl debut this fall with a brand new full-length, Boxing the Moonlight. The band dabbled in love and affection on their first record, 2011’s Out of Love. This time, however, Mister Heavenly are in a scrappy mood, embracing a tougher sound than their previous effort. We’re always trying to write the perfect little nugget,” Kattner says, that will endure even into the dystopian future that looks more and more likely every day. Or, as he puts it, “When you find that melted jukebox, and that Mister Heavenly record is spinning, you’re going to try your damndest to find a coin to put in it.”

Vinyl LP pressing. 2012 album from the Alt-Rock outfit. Deerhoof love music, so it comes as no surprise that they'd follow up their polygenre Polyvinyl debut Deerhoof vs. Evil with another album of distinct songs containing music. Other bands in their cultural position have found alternate methods of keeping the public's interest - visually stunning Tumblr accounts, promotional fonts, salvia grinders, skulls containing snuff films - but Deerhoof are still having too many melodic dreams to ride the storm. Instead, Ms. Matsuzaki, Mr. Saunier, Mr. Dietrich, and Professor Rodriguez are promoting their new batch of 11 song so that one might consider the worth of a melody and perhaps even smile.

Meric Long and Logan Kroeber recorded The Dodos 2013 album, Carrier, in their hometown of San Francisco. After guitarist Chris Reimer passed away in early 2012, The Dodos reassessed everything about the band - in particular Long s songwriting. "Chris was a huge influence on the way I think about guitar, songwriting, and music in general, " reveals Long. "Seeing how he could transform and shape sound with an electric guitar inspired me to explore more tones and use those tones to begin writing a song. " And so, when he began to formulate the tracks that would ultimately comprise Carrier, Long employed two principles he inherited from Reimer: patience to let a song develop and a judgment-free enthusiasm for sound.

- Cavalo Find at an Indie Store

This is Rodrigo Amarante's first solo record. It was made during an unexpected but very welcome exile, in a land he wouldn't have predicted he'd linger for too long; the west of the west. But the sense of distance and his newly acquired refreshing anonymity kept him staying. Rodrigo found himself leaning on that distance, projecting onto it, the space echoing back to him with a new voice. Cavalo means horse in Portuguese, a word also used for people who channel spirits in service, something normal to Brazilians. Another instance of an amalgam between vehicle and vehiculated, and writing these songs felt like that, an attempt to merge these often conflicting voices, the mind, and the gut.Rodrigo repeatedly found himself a foreigner, an explorer, moving from city to city every three years as a kid. He pretended to have the forbearance and courage he ended up forging while secretly carrying the resentment of the imposed detours, of the wait to return. When he finally arrived back in Rio no longer a child and with an accent three times tampered he realized that his hometown wasn't his, that he had invented it in light of what he saw elsewhere, it's memory a dream of scents and light that didn't seem to exist in space, maybe in time. He discovered himself a stranger, what he had been since he first left and knew to be temporary, what he realized was definitive. And it was a bitterness at first but it slowly turned into something sweet, warm, he felt free and grateful, he had to invent that too, cut the bushes to a new path. He departed again.

To make Certainty Waves, their seventh album as The Dodos, guitarist Meric Long and percussionist Logan Kroeber had to forget everything they knew about what it meant to be The Dodos. Like the duo's breakout sophomore album Visiter, Certainty Waves finds The Dodos embracing the unlimited possibilities of a time when there were no preconceptions of what the band should sound like. Questions like whether the group needed to incorporate more than just "acoustic guitar and drums," and just what exactly the ratio should be of acoustic vs. Electric guitar suddenly took a backseat to the realization that so much emphasis was mistakenly being put on form rather than spirit.

Following the release of his critically-lauded 2015 album All Are Saved, songwriter/producer Fred Thomas entered a period of enormous transition. He quit his job, got married and moved to Canada, all between multiple tours that ran the spectrum from sold out opening slots to sleeping in the car after empty gigs. At the end of yet another tour he returned to Athens, Georgia, to again work with producer Drew Vandenberg (of Montreal, Mothers) on an album aiming to encapsulate the nonstop changes that had sprung out of this phase of his life. Naturally, this record is named Changer.

Generationals - Con Law (10-Year Reissue) [LP] Find at an Indie Store

Limited 180gm colored vinyl LP pressing includes digital download. New Orleans natives Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer struck up a friendship in high school and formed Generationals in 2008. Though their retro vibe bears the influence of Phil Spector's mid-century pop, Generationals' sound is wide-ranging and diverse, incorporating elements of Britpop, dance and electronic music. Above all, with each release the band continues zeroing in on their strong suit: superior pop songwriting. To celebrate it's 10-year anniversary, Generationals' beloved debut album, 2009's Con Law triumphantly returns to print (colored 180g LP) after years of being unavailable on vinyl. Features the band's breakout hit "When They Fight, They Fight" and many other fan favorites. Oranges Band founder Daniel Black engineered and produced the record in the style of his heroes - George Martin, Phil Spector, Jeff Lynn, and Quincy Jones - with meticulous attention to detail and a willingness to make the recordings sound old. The result is one of those "first record" moments that blissfully wills it's listeners into repeat listens even a decade later!

BACHELOR - Doomin' Sun Find at an Indie Store

Goldenrod w/ Red ink. Bachelor, the new project from Melina Duterte (Jay Som) and Ellen Kempner (Palehound), is not a band, it's a friendship. In January of 2020, the duo packed the entirety of Duterte's recording equipment into two cars and headed to a rental house in Topanga, CA where over the course of two weeks, they wrote and recorded their debut album Doomin' Sun. In this space, Kempner and Duterte hybridized their individual songwriting talents, producing a collection that slips between moods with ease and showcases their lyrical prowess. On the bass-heavy rock song "Stay in the Car," the duo paint a yearning portrait of a woman in a supermarket parking lot, a barely-contained desire oozing out of cotidian descriptions like: "She burns out of the market/ Plastic bags digging into wrists/ Blood stuck in her fingertips." The heavy bass makes another appearance on "Anything At All," a track with a chorus so playful it could be a schoolyard taunt, defying the darker lyrical themes heard on the verses. There was a lot of pain that went into the record, especially around themes of queerness and climate change inspired by the red skies and wildfires subsuming Australia at the time. However, when the duo did shed tears during the creative process, they weren't tears of sadness, they were tears of laughter. When Kempner and Duterte look back on those weeks, what they remember first is shortness of breath and the inability to track vocal takes without falling to the floor howling. They couldn't remember a time they'd ever been so delirious with creativity, so overwhelmed with joy.

Rodrigo Amarante - Drama Find at an Indie Store

You may know Rodrigo Amarante already. You may have heard "Tuyo," his theme tune to the Netflix drama Narcos, or the Little Joy album, recorded with Fab Moretti and Binki Shapiro, you might have noted his name among the credits on songs by Gal Costa, Norah Jones and Gilberto Gil; or perhaps you saw him play live with Brazilian samba big band Orquestra Imperial, or with Rio rockers Los Hermanos; you really should have heard his debut album, Cavalo, released in 2014. You may think you know Rodrigo Amarante already, but Drama, his second solo album, is going to introduce a whole new level of confusion to the mix.Drama is purposefully caricatural, cinematic; "As biased as memory". It flows as an arch, playfully deceiving, like a tale. The ominous opening number gives you a hint that things might not be what they appear, and clues are hiding in plain sight. "Projection, attachment, deception: that is Drama.". The sunny upbeat start of "Maré", with a nearly childish opening melody, echoes something less naïf: "The tide will fetch what the ebb brings". The beat helps you move past. "Tango" sounds like falling in love on the dance floor, warm and tropical, it celebrates companionship, while perhaps pleading for it, yearning. "Tara," meanwhile, feels like something Astrud Gilberto might have sung at the height of bossa nova's global popularity, with the twist of the big-band-era muted horns on the chorus, nearly self-deprecating, as if mocking such idealized infatuation. Drama closes with the piano on "The End." To live is to fall. After all the emotional upheavals the singer has put his cast through, is this some kind of farewell to this mortal coil? "Everything Furthers." says Amarante. "Whispering, you get louder like that, people respond better to an invitation", and adds: "Staring at the absurd while remaining kind, being open to the gifts of confusion; that's why we create these tools that are stories and songs, to help us see each other."

Vivian Girls - Everything Goes Wrong [Colored Vinyl] [180 Gram] [Download Included] Find at an Indie Store

Limited 180gm colored vinyl LP pressing, includes digital download. Issued exactly one year after their self-titled debut, Vivian Girls' sophomore album Everything Goes Wrong (2009) is longer than the 22-minutes their first outing clocked in at, with the band having taken their time and recorded it in six days - rather than the three their debut took - though many of the songs were still recorded in single takes. Whilst the swirling noise Brooklynites once again captured their raw, fun edge - as the influence of '60s girl groups, The Ramones as well as surf and indie pop, still ring true, Everything Goes Wrong is without a doubt a darker, moodier album than it's predecessor. Vivian Girls' long out-of-print second album is available once again on colored 180g vinyl LP coinciding with the release of the band's new full-length, Memory.

Exquisite Corpse / Various Gry Red Dlcd - Exquisite Corpse / Various (Concrete Gray w/ Red Swirl Vinyl) Find at an Indie Store

During the first days of quarantine lockdown, Kaia Fischer of Rainer Maria began to conceptualize what would grow into Exquisite Corpse while meditating on the newly unfolding weirdness they and their creative friends were experiencing. Exquisite Corpse is a real-time sonic experiment intended to open the door for the label's wide-ranging talents to create something beautiful in the midst of upheaval. In total, 47 participants rounded out 11 groups of 4-5 musicians assembled more or less at random from all ends of the Polyvinyl family tree. Each team worked from scratch to write an original song, an adaptation of the 'Exquisite Corpse' game where each player adds to a shared drawing. Musically, the results are every bit as exciting and unpredictable as the concept envisioned, with collaborators spanning the globe - from London, Tokyo, Nova Scotia, LA, New Zealand, and Louisville. Artists known for sparkling pop worked with more ragged rockers or folks from acoustic-leaning emo bands, and the end results defied the expected sum of their parts. Even though Exquisite Corpse is timestamped with traces of overwhelming uncertainty that colored the pandemic's earliest days, the music is by-and-large joyful, daring and fun. With contributions from longtime label signees like Xiu Xiu, Braid, American Football, and Mark Duplass of Volcano, I'm Still Excited!! to more recent roster additions such as Palehound, Kero Kero Bonito, Jeff Rosenstock, Yumi Zouma, and Anamanaguchi - Exquisite Corpse captures the spirit of kinship and community that is foundational to Polyvinyl's Midwest roots.

Limited 180 gram colored vinyl LP pressing in gatefold sleeve, includes digital download. Previously out of print, 2004's Fabulous Muscles has been re-mastered for vinyl. The music is drawn from British post punk and synth pop, modern Western classical, noise and experimental music, Asian percussion music, American folk, torch singers, house, techno and 1950s rock n roll. There are sounds used to rhythmically push some songs forward in a top 40 way but with fewer straight beats. Noise restrictions also led to more use of single, quiet acoustic instruments. This record is the most pop Xiu Xiu record and the most experimental. It was recorded at home in Seattle and Oakland.

The sophomore full-length from Post Animal, Forward Motion Godyssey unfolds with a frenetic momentum, mercurial and unhinged and gloriously volatile. In a bold leap forward both artistically and sonically, the Chicago-based alt-prog band sets their existential questioning to a wildly kinetic sound, mining inspiration from genres as divergent as electronic and psych-rock and—at one particularly sublime point—achieving both stoner-metal brutishness and dreamy R&B elegance in the very same instant. At turns rhapsodic and unsettling, meditative and chaotic, the result is anything but subtle: a body of work that beckons deep involvement from the listener, a richly layered experience primed to leave its audience indelibly transported.

Starfucker (STRFKR) - Future Past Life Find at an Indie Store

STRFKR has always been a constantly evolving entity, growing over the years from rambunctious beginnings into the manicured electro-pop perfection they exhibited on their last studio album, 2016's pristine Being No One, Going Nowhere. New album Future Past Life breaks new ground, dialing back some of the high-gloss production they're known for to craft songs that are stripped down, spaced out and somehow as visceral as they are dream-like.In 2014, STRFKR's principal songwriter/lead vocalist Josh Hodges was staying in Amsterdam for a few months, working on the music that became 2016's Being No One, Going Nowhere. By complete chance, a European traveller who was crashing at Hodges' house in L.A. while he was abroad connected him with some like-minded musicians in Amsterdam, Mathias Janmat and David Hoogerheide. Even though they were more or less strangers, the three musicians clicked almost instantly, coming up with new songs that would eventually make up the bulk of Future Past Life. The immaculate but danceable pop that has long been STRFKR's calling card is pushed into exciting new places on Future Past Life. It's a strange and beautiful sonic environment, one that finds STRFKR growing as they embrace the chance and spontaneity that brought these songs about in the first place.

Concocting a freshly strange blend of synth pop and damaged folk music, Grapetooth is a band from Chicago, IL that consists of Chris Bailoni and Clay Frankel. The two don't remember clearly how they met, but Frankel, home from tour with garage rock outfit Twin Peaks, began dropping in at Bailoni's residence in the winter of 2015. The two began writing spontaneous songs in Bailoni's synth-laden bedroom studio, which had long stood as the base of operations for his own wonderfully weird solo and producer work as Home-Sick. The album captured a feeling the duo happily felt was somewhere between the doomy disco of 80's new wave and the woozy laments of artists like Arthur Russell and Jeff Cowell. It contains songs about death and love and the movie Badlands and more than a few songs about wine.

A raw pop record infused with undeniable hooks, distortion pedals, passion, grit, and maybe a little insanity, The High Country is the first SSLYBY album to truly capture the power and energy the group exudes when performing live. SSLYBY recorded The High Country as a power trio consisting of Dickey, guitarist/vocalist Will Knauer, and bassist Tom Hembree, a founding member of the group who left after Broom, but returned to (as Dickey describes it) “stir things up in the best way possible and demand we play louder and faster.” After a month spent demoing and practicing, the three musicians convened at Seattle’s legendary Hall of Justice to record with engineer Beau Sorenson (Superchunk, Garbage). In many ways, The High Country is the record Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin has been building up to its entire career.

However, Hissing Fauna is also one of the most personal Of Montreal albums, with Kevin Barnes pouring tremendous amounts of emotion, heartbreak, frustration and elation into it's twelve tracks.

Owen - I Do Perceive Find at an Indie Store

Chicago's Mike Kinsella continually reinvents and refines the musicianship that has followed him since his drumming days in Cap'n Jazz over a decade ago. I DO PERCIEVE is no different the follow-up to 2004s THE EP continues the collaborative direction Mike has been taking with Owen. This time, cousin Nate Kinsella (Make Believe, Joan of Arc) lends asssistance both on instrumentation and soundboard, helping to create eight grogeous cuts above and beyond anything Owen has done before. While the poetic songwriing and intricate musicianship of previous release remain, upbeat arrangements accompany each song's development, culminating in an effect that's both majestic and wonderful.

Owen - I Do Perceive [LP] Find at an Indie Store

Also, can we use this description: In the years since it's release, American Football's self-titled debut full-length has quietly become one of the most fiercely beloved titles in the Polyvinyl catalog. Though the trio - Mike Kinsella (Cap'n Jazz, Owen, Owls), Steve Lamos, and Steve Holmes - only played a few shows and released just one other record (a three-song EP that preceded this full-length), their influence and legacy has steadily continued to grow in the time after they disbanded. From it's now iconic artwork to the band's unique songwriting approach (highlighted by an emphasis on shifting time signatures and sincere lyrics), American Football proves a record doesn't become a true classic through flashiness or catering to trends, but rather the deep emotional connection it forges between the music and the listener. After guitarist Steve Holmes discovered a set of cassette tapes containing a variety of unreleased recordings, the band curated an album's worth of these rare live recordings, demos, and practice sessions (in which the group rehearsed material they never recorded elsewhere) to complement the original record. Now available on 2xLP, American Football (Deluxe Edition) features beautifully expanded packaging that incorporates new photographs from Chris Strong along with lyrics, detailed liner notes written by the band, and never-before-seen band pictures.

Squirrel Flower is the alias 22-year-old Ella Williams adopted for herself when writing songs and poetry as a child. Coming from a professional musical family spanning generations, Williams has always been surrounded by music. By 14 she started writing more seriously and released her first EP of folk music under her own name. After immersing herself in the DIY scene of her Boston hometown before moving to Iowa to study art + gender, women’s, & sexuality studies at Grinnell College, she found a more experimental sound, linking her choral roots, classical harmony and ethereal chord structures, and released her first EP as Squirrel Flower, Early Winter Songs From Middle America. Her second EP, Contact Sports, is a perfectly formed collection of songs about relationships; intimacy, dependency, betrayal and geography, set to the backdrop of the American midwest. The songs represent push and pull of love and intimacy while also being meditations on place. From the fulsome guitar and visceral, cathartic breakdown of lead single "Conditions" to the carefully layered beauty of "Hands Melt," this varied collection frequently impresses with its maturity and craftsmanship. Tracks like the fuzzy, dimly-lit euphoria of "Daylight Savings" are spellbinding in their turn of phrase as Williams sings “I know we’ve gained an hour, but I feel like we’ve lost two.”

Anna Burch - If You're Dreaming Find at an Indie Store

When Anna Burch introduced herself on her 2018 debut Quit The Curse, it was with a concentrated wash of energetic, serotonin-boosting pop. Two years later, Burch's follow up If You're Dreaming takes us down a different path than it's predecessor, shedding some nervous energy in favor of a deeper exploration of an internal world. If You're Dreaming was tracked with producer Sam Evian in his home studio in the Catskill mountains of upstate New York. The end goal was to present not just an assortment of new songs, but craft an album that moved dynamically through an interconnected emotional arc. With recurring themes of isolation, weariness and longing, these songs deliver that emotional arc with a delicate but uncompromising execution. Even at it's most introverted, If You're Dreaming is always warm and present. Daring and clear-headed, these songs cut deeper in their subtleties. If You're Dreaming moves with intention, taking it's time revealing new layers of sophistication and growth in Burch's always charming songcraft.

Vinyl LP pressing, includes digital download. Hazel English is a 25-year-old Oakland-based artist who makes beautifully blurry indie-pop music powered by transcendent melodies and caked in layers of Californian sunshine and redolent reverb. She's drawn comparisons to everyone from Alvvays and Pains Of Being Pure At Heart to touring partners Ride, while her soaring, hypnotic, vocal arrangements have been likened to everyone from Grimes to DIIV. Her label debut, Just Give In / Never Going Home, collates a brilliant snap-shot of her DIY creations to date. Those that have followed her meteoric ascendance through the hazy blogosphere so far will recognize the title track 'Never Going Home' and 'It's Not Real,' both of which were championed by Gorilla Versus Bear, Stereogum, The Line of Best Fit, and more.

A lot of things have changed in the last century, but love isn't one of them. With the internet we have a thousand different ways to reach out to loved ones, but every day it goes unrequited, unspoken, and unfulfilled, just like it has for thousands of years. At least that's how it sounds on Love in the Time of E-Mail, the second full length by Antarctigo Vespucci. Consisting of Chris Farren (Fake Problems), Jeff Rosenstock (who Pitchfork called "one of punk rock's greatest, most effusive living songwriters"), and Benny Horowitz (Gaslight Anthem), Antarctigo Vespucci are a low-key supergroup. And though everyone in the band came from DIY and punk, on Love in the Time of E-Mail they set punk aside to blissfully embrace all their poppiest instincts.

Vivian Girls - Memory Find at an Indie Store

Vivian Girls : Memory - During their initial run as a band, Vivian Girls were a band of outsiders for outsiders. The ones who loved The Wipers as much as Burt Bacharach as much as The Shangri-Las. They were the band that made the punks feel like they could sing harmonies and pop fans could get in touch with their anger. Cassie Ramone's lyrics alternated between love, loss and rage. They were heart-on-their-sleeves romantics in one breath and a spiraling explosion of feedback in the next. After their third album - 2011's Share the Joy - the members of Vivian Girls parted ways and the band who had known each other since they were teenagers, went about the business of living. Katy Goodman and Ali Koehler both moved to Los Angeles, continued making music (La Sera for Goodman, Best Coast and Upset for Koehler) and started families. The trio began playing together again during the spring of 2018 and by October Memory was recorded with producer Rob Barbarto (Kevin Morby, The Fall). Memory is an album filled with personal reflections on toxic relationships, the false promise of new love, mental health struggles, and finding ways to accept oneself amidst it all. Fittingly, the sonic textures of the album match this sense of desperation and longing. It's a loud, snarling journey and there's a sense of streamlined direction and intensity to the performances: it sounds like a band returning to a core idea of itself.

Cassie Ramone continued to make art in Brooklyn, released two solo records and two full-lengths with Kevin Morby as The Babies, and moved to Los Angeles in 2018 after a phone call with Goodman spurred the idea of playing music together again.

And yet the record feels prescient, unexpectedly and uniquely suited for this moment. After building a devoted cult following with the acerbic ska-punk of the Arrogant Sons of Bitches, the DIY heroics of Bomb the Music Industry!, and three increasingly celebrated solo albums, NO DREAM arrives with an entirely new set of expectations in an entirely new era."You can't help it. You can't stop it. You see these atrocities and want it to end. But it's not going to stop, and when that feeling sets in it's a full-on panic freak-out." It may not be a hopeful message, but it's one that ties together the sense of impending doom and gives it direction, voicing a rage that many struggle to articulate."What's the point of feeling this way? Does it help to vocalize it?" Rosenstock's rhetorical question is answered by NO DREAM, an accidentally universal record for a damaged, difficult time.

Xiu Xiu - Oh No Find at an Indie Store

Xiu Xiu makes beautiful music for hard times. For nearly 20 years, the band has a track record of crafting experimental music for moments when life's harsh realities meet it's existential mysteries. On the latest album, Jamie Stewart explores a recent revelation and is reminded of the power of the band's music to surprise and connect. Listening to the songs on OH NO, it is hard to feel truly alone. Instead, it is a reminder that even when we're alone, we're alone together. OH NO, the group's newest album, is an album of duets, with Stewart sharing the stage with an array of guests who have made an impact on him personally and musically. This is the first Xiu Xiu album where every song spotlights Jamie Stewart and a collaborator. The album features artists across the musical spectrum, including Sharon Van Etten, Circuit des Yeux's Haley Fohr, Grouper's Liz Harris, Alice Bag, Chelsea Wolfe, Owen Pallet, and Twin Shadow's George Lewis Jr., all drift into Xiu Xiu's distinctive soundworld. The album was born out of anguish and isolation, but exists as it does because of a profound rediscovery of community and friendship. Xiu Xiu - Oh No [Solid Cream & Solid Scarlet LP] Find at an Indie Store

Solid Cream & Solid Scarlet Vinyl. It is the sound of finding one's place in the world after the destructive powers of jealousy and mistrust make any map seemingly unreadable.

Owen - Other People's Songs Find at an Indie Store

Other People’s Songs is a collection of eight covers that Kinsella recorded this spring in Chicago with trusted producer Neil Strauch. At first glance, the list of the rock and punk artists whose tracks Kinsella tackled -- among them Against Me!, Depeche Mode, The Promise Ring, and Lungfish -- might seem at odds with the often quieter, lushly arranged music he releases under the Owen moniker. But upon closer inspection, one finds the kind of excellent songwriting and lyrical wit that are hallmarks of Kinsella’s own recorded output.

Limited 180 gram vinyl LP pressing including digital download. Out of the Garden is a mission statement that underscores the "power" in power-pop and is punctuated by lyrics as razor-sharp as the hooks. Written over a two-year period during a break from touring, the album's emphasis on re-defining feminine expectations was shaped by primary songwriter Jess Abbott's experiences living in Minneapolis and working at a liquor store in a rough part of town. Abbott's fearlessness to discuss personal topics is referenced in the album's title, an allusion to exiting Eden and leaving behind all the restrictive cultural norms engrained in the Biblical "paradise": tradition, purity, holiness, binary gender, heterosexuality, and the idea that anything is forbidden (especially for women).

In conjunction with the new (third) Owen album, "I Do Perceive" being released on both CD and LP, Polyvinyl is releasing the first two albums on vinyl as well. Following the disbandment of American Football, Mike Kinsella took that sound, stripped it down, and created Owen. On this debut, he wrote and performed everything himself. While retaining all the hooks and charms of his previous band, "Owen" is much more subdued and sparse than anything Mike had attempted before, resulting in a beautiful album that gained cult status.

Irene Grandi - Peel EP [Vinyl] Find at an Indie Store

Even before he released a note of music as Diane Coffee, Shaun Fleming had put together quite a portfolio of work. Check out his IMDB page and you’ll find 20+ acting credits as a result of a childhood spent lending his voice talents to Disney. Search YouTube and you’ll find videos from his years as a semi-professional skateboarder. And if you’re familiar with Foxygen, you’ll know that he was the drummer from the band’s inception — before recently departing to put his full-time focus and energy into Diane Coffee. Often described as “psychedelic Motown,” Fleming’s music has caught the attention of Run the Jewels (who sampled Diane Coffee on RTJ2) and NPR, where he performed a Tiny Desk Concert that gave the whole world a preview of his theatrical approach to performing. All things considered, it looks as though Fleming’s decision to step out from behind the kit and place himself center stage is what will ultimately be the highlight of an already impressive resume. Peel features two new and exclusive tracks.

Phantastic Ferniture - Phantastic Ferniture Find at an Indie Store

Phantastic Ferniture is the project of old friends Julia Jacklin, Elizabeth Hughes, Ryan K Brennan, and Tom Stephens, who wanted to shake the shackles of their meticulously crafted solo work to experience a second, giddy adolescence. That's evident in the urgent garage-pop perfection of the band's more spontaneous and less technical self-titled debut. Whenever the band members could get into the same room, Brennan took the producer's role (as well as the drummer's seat): at Sydney's Studios 301, Defwolf and One Flight Up, with additional vocals tracked at The Sitting Room in New Zealand.

Pedro The Lion - Phoenix [Cassette] Find at an Indie Store

Pedro the Lion has always been David Bazan, but it took a long time to get back there.

In August 2016, during what he now recognizes as his lowest point, Bazan was touring the country alone in an aging minivan and found himself in his hometown of Phoenix, AZ. In need of a break from the road, he spent a night off at his grandparents’ house instead of driving on to San Diego. Before leaving town the next morning, after realizing that even the most familiar places can become unrecognizable, Bazan gave himself the gift of a quick detour past the house he grew up in, and on the way, experienced a breakthrough - one that would lead him both forward and back to another home he had built many years before.

From the beginning, Pedro the Lion didn’t work like the bands Bazan had played drums in, where each player came up with their own parts. Instead, like scripting scenes of dialogue for actors to play with, Bazan recorded and arranged all of the skeletal accompaniments for his obsessively introspective lyrics and spare melodies. Each player would then learn their parts and, together as a band, they brought the skeleton to life. While bandmates played on a few recordings, Bazan often played all or most of the instruments himself.

“I found so much joy working this way,” Bazan remembers. “It came naturally and yielded a feeling and a sound that couldn’t have existed by any other process. At the same time, I was also aware that not everyone wanted to play in a band where the singer wrote all the parts and might perform them on the record. Someone even suggested it might not be a valid approach to having a band in the first place. Being insecure and wanting to find camaraderie, I became conflicted about my natural process.”

By 2002, after recording Control, the high rate of turnover in the band finally caused Bazan to ditch his “natural process” in favor of a collaborative writing process. When, after a couple more years, this move did nothing to stabilize turnover, Bazan was perplexed. In November 2005, Bazan decided to stop doing Pedro the Lion altogether.

Ironically, Bazan didn’t see “going solo” as a chance to revert back to his original process of writing and playing all the parts. For the next decade Pedro the Lion felt off limits, even forgotten, like a childhood home Bazan had moved out of. He pushed forward with releasing solo albums & relentless touring in living rooms and clubs, through every part of the US and beyond, sometimes with a band, but mostly on his own. It took a toll on his family and more acutely on himself. By the summer of 2016, he still hadn’t found the personal clarity or the steady collaboration he’d been seeking and was at the end of his rope.

“I had abandoned my natural way of working in the hopes of creating space for a consistent band to write with...and it hadn’t worked. So I got a rehearsal space, mic’d up drums, bass, and guitar, and really leaned into my original process again. It immediately felt like like home. Before long I realized it also felt like Pedro the Lion.”

In June 2018, with Bazan on bass, vocals, and arrangement writing, Erik Walters on guitar and backing vocals, and Sean Lane on drums, Pedro the Lion went into Studio X and Hall of Justice with producer Andy Park to create Phoenix, the first new Pedro album in 15 years.

Squirrel Flower's heart-rending sophomore album Planet (i), following her 2020 debut I Was Born Swimming, is exactly that. A singular planet, a world entirely of artist Ella Williams' making. The title came first to her as a joke: it's her made-up name for the new planet people will inevitably settle and destroy after leaving Earth, as well as the universe imagined within her music. "Planet (i) is my body and mind, " Williams says, "and it's the physical and emotional world of our planet. It's both."Buoyed by her steadfast vision and propelled by her burning comet of a voice, the record is a love letter to disaster in every form imaginable. Tornadoes, flooding, gaslighting assholes, cars on fire-these songs fully embrace a planet in ruin.As Williams rides from melancholy to jubilance to complete emotional devastation over the course of twelve songs, she carves out a future for herself and those she loves. Planet (i), out June 25, 2021 on Polyvinyl, is at once a refuge, an act of self-healing, and a musical reflection of Squirrel Flower's inner and outer worlds.

Jeff Rosenstock was an anxious kid who grew into an anxious adult and has also made a bunch of music along the way, with a bunch of bands, most notably Bomb the Music Industry! Who apparently pioneered giving shit away for free on the internet - or at least got some of the credit for it. Now he plays with his bi-coastal band of rad musicians, mixing punk energy with diverse instrumentation and occasional accuracy. The new record Post- was written in the days after the 2017 Presidential inauguration, recorded in a marathon session and finished moments before it was released on New Year's Day. The lyrics get (really) heavy but the melodies are so catchy and the builds are so big and bright that the end result is more of a rallying cry than a surrender.

Anna Burch - Quit The Curse [Colored LP] Find at an Indie Store

Anna Burch TITLE: Quit the Curse - The Detroit singer/songwriter has been visible for the better part of her years-long career singing in Frontier Ruckus, or more recently co-fronting Failed Flowers, but somewhere along the way a vibrant collection of solo material slowly began taking form. Growing up in Michigan, Burch's fixation with music transitioned from a childhood of Disney and Carole King sing-alongs to more typically angsty teenage years spent covering Bright Eyes and Fiona Apple at open mic nights. 2018 "To me this album marks the end of an era of uncertainty. Writing songs about my emotional struggles helped me to work through some negative patterns in my personal life, while giving me the sense of creative agency I'd been searching for." The nine songs that comprise Quit the Curse come on sugary and upbeat, but their darker lyrical themes and serpentine song structures are tucked neatly into what seem at first just like uncommonly catchy tunes. Burch's crystal clear vocal harmonies and gracefully crafted songs feel so warm and friendly that it's easy to miss the lyrics about destructive relationships, daddy issues and substance abuse that cling like spiderwebs to the hooky melodies. The maddeningly absent lover being sung to in "2 Cool 2 Care", the crowded exhaustion of "With You Every Day" or even the grim, paranoid tale of scoring drugs in "Asking 4 A Friend" sometimes feel overshadowed by the shimmering sonics that envelop them. Emerging from years spent as a supporting player, Quit the Curse stands as a liberation from feeling like Burch's own songwriting voice was just out of reach - an opportunity, finally, for the world at large to hear what's been on her mind for quite a while.

How do you control the thoughts that control you? What does it mean to get better? What does it mean to have a relationship with yourself?Recorded with Andrew Sarlo (Big Thief, Empress Of) and Andy Seltzer (Maggie Rogers), among others, Medford approached this album as a curator. She handpicked the producers that fit each song, which explains the range and experimentation showcased. Medford then recruited Chris Coady to mix and tie everything together into one cohesive piece.Dizzying and enthralling, Show Me How You Disappear is the sound of someone coming apart and putting themselves back together - the moment an old mantra, repeated into the mirror time and time again, finally clicks. To look at your reflection, and finally feel seen.

Jeff Rosenstock - Ska Dream Find at an Indie Store

SKA DREAM is a complete re-recording of Jeff Rosenstock's critically-acclaimed 2020 record NO DREAM however this time around all the songs are ska songs you're welcome. The very good idea to make this record came together when, like many other bands throughout this pandemic that refused to participate in super spreading events, we were trying to find a fun way to make some music together to share with people. Otherwise we were just spending our evenings texting the group chat in dread about the collapsing world around us. Not the most fun band activity. As with most things ska in my life, what started out as a fun goof with friends eventually morphed into "Hey, what if we tried to make it good though?" All of us have a pretty deep history playing and touring the country in punk/ska bands. We all understand the stigma that comes along with ska, we've all dealt with the pitfalls of it, and we've all kept on truckin' regardless. If you are one of those people who loves music as long as it isn't ska, that's cool, we see you. This record isn't for you and you don't have to listen to it. Byeeee.Okay, everyone else, we see you too, we love you and check it out, SKA DREAM is real.

Jacco Gardner - Somnium Find at an Indie Store

Somnium is not necessarily representative of Jacco Gardner's new Lisbon surroundings in an obvious sense but more a depiction and projection of his thoughts and dreams whilst spent walking the streets; which he did whilst thinking about the books he'd been reading and imagining those world's put to sound. Jacco has been known to create swirling psychedelic pop boosted by his rich, resonate and baroque voice but on Somnium, his vocals are gone and in their place is an equally seamless melodic exploration but an instrumental one with a synthesized sci-fi edge.

Frustrated by the conventional approach of making albums, where new songs might not be released for six months or more after being recorded, Generationals - the duo of Grant Widmer and Ted Joyner - took a more immediate approach by releasing a slew of standalone tracks throughout 2017 and 2018. And now, for the first time, the nine singles the band unveiled digitally (along with an exclusive, previously unreleased tenth song) will receive a physical release as State Dogs: Singles 2017-18. Laura Jane Grace - Stay Alive [Cassette] Find at an Indie Store

On August 27, 2021, Anamanaguchi will release Summer Singles 2010/2020, a 2xLP set that unites two fan-favorite collections of singles in a first-ever physical edition and confirms the band's reputation among those in-the-know as one of the most casually trailblazing and unexpectedly refined bands around. Each eight-song set was originally recorded and released in the wake of one of Anamanaguchi's most beloved albums. In 2010, they created the cult-classic soundtrack for Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game, which was just reissued this January, and cemented their role as pioneers in the homemade, video game world of chiptune music. The 2020 singles followed the critically acclaimed [USA] LP, an album at once more introspective and expansive, which hit No. 3 on Billboard Heatseakers chart and won this praise from NPR: "The sound just fills you up in this incredibly joyous and wonderful way." Explains the band's Ary Warnaar: "The summer singles series was sort of a fun, low-pressure way to ease us out of that hyperfocus album tunnel and burn off that extra energy. It's like spending a year training for a marathon, and then you finally run the marathon, but the next day you're still in the best shape of your life. So you might as well go on a run the next day, just for yourself, however many miles you wanna do, no rules."

Shy Boys - Talk Loud Find at an Indie Store

On Shy Boys' third full-length album, Talk Loud, the Kansas City quintet push themselves artistically at nearly every turn, crafting 11 songs that explore new instrumentation, intricate vocal harmonies, and endearing, yet at times dark lyrics resulting in some of the band's best work to date. Recorded primarily at Jackpot Studios in Portland, OR, with additional mixing and overdubs done at the band's home studio in Kansas City, MO, Talk Loud is both fun and scary at the same time. Every sound is imbued with emotion, every flick of the wrist is meaningful. On "Fraid I Might Die," the band grapples with mortality and the passage of time coupled with some of the most interesting vocal arrangements ever featured on a Shy Boys song. On other stand-outs, like "View From The Sky," the band highlight their varied musical influences by blending doo-wop backing vocals with laser-show synth work. Talk Loud is cinematic, sparkly, jumpy, and haunting all at the same time - a group of songs that have the heart-string-yanking ability of music concocted in a laboratory, while still feeling heavily human. It's complicated, it's swirly, it surrounds you and extends itself deep into your brain.

Oceanator - Things I Never Said Find at an Indie Store

The first Yumi Zouma album to feature live drums, Truth or Consequences radiates a brazen spirit of perseverance. “I love the duality in a lot of disco songs, where they’re incredibly upbeat, but there’s real frustration in the lyrics – sort of like, ‘Nothing’s going the way I want, but I’ve got to deal with it any way I can,’” Simpson says.

Kevin and Christina make out in a car at the airport, flipping off the police officer that tells them to keep moving. Kevin and Christina discuss taking ecstasy as couple's therapy. Kevin and Christina break down and then reconnect. The new love we heard about on the last Of Montreal record, White is Relic/Irrealis Mood, is settling. If that was the falling-in-love record, then this is the staying-in-love record. That was the easy part; this is the interesting part, the challenging part, the next chapter of Barnes' autobiographical album streak, UR FUN. After several albums recorded with collaborators and various band members, Barnes opted to record this one completely alone. In his home studio in Athens, Georgia, Barnes isolated himself in creative hibernation, working obsessive 12-plus hour days arranging manic synth and drum machine maps on a computer screen with bouncy, melodic basslines, glam guitars and layered vocal harmonies. Inspired by albums like Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual and Janet Jackson's Control, Barnes set out to make UR FUN into the kind of album where every song could be a single, complete with huge hooky choruses and nostalgic dance grooves. The result is an unstoppably fun album that could also pass for a carefully sequenced greatest-hits collection if taken out of context. UR FUN is another fascinating look into what makes Barnes one of the most prolific and gifted songwriters of this decade.

A move from San Francisco to Los Angeles to explore a collaborative relationship with producer Justin Raisen (Sky Ferreira, Charli XCX, Angel Olsen) proved to bring a fine tuned sense of pop craftsmanship to the songs that would become Wake UP!

On tracks like "Shaking," "Off My Mind," and "Five and Dime," English's sharpened sense for songwriting are on full display with timeless pop hooks and addictive melodies. Wake UP! Casts a wry, appraising eye over modern life and promises to be one of the highlights of 2020.

Of Montreal - White Is Relic / Irrealis Mood Find at an Indie Store

2018 release from the Athens, Georgia-based indie band led by Kevin Barnes. "Two important events occurred during the making of White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood. I became "Simulated Reality" paranoid and I fell in love. I feel like a switch was recently turned on in my brain and now I'm beginning to see through the lies that have been fed to me my whole life by the masters of media and by those who control and manipulate the narrative of our cultural identity and social order. I'm always searching for new identities so this concept of the death of Whiteness appeals to me greatly. Might be the only way to save the world." -Kevin Barnes, January 2018.

The debut release from Louisville's White Reaper. White Reaper ? formed by Tony Esposito (vocals/guitar) and twin brothers Nick (drums) and Sam Wilkerson (bass) - combines sparkling hooks and fluid, fluttering rhythms to create psychedelia-tinged garage punk that make heads bob without sacrificing an ounce of sonic bite.

12" clear pink vinyl at 45 rpm. This debut EP is a refreshing blast of bubblegum pop and mad garage punk, designed to catch the ear of the insomniac. Impossibly high-energy, these songs are catchy and cool-as is the name of the opening track-and loudly teenage-punk. It's not too often a band strikes such a careful balance of strong energy and refined melody. "Cool" starts explosively and keeps it's momentum; "Funn" has lead singer Lexi Drexelius asking himself questions he later answers. Brothers Nick and Sam Wilkerson provide heartwarming background vocals. It's a short album, a total of sixteen minutes, in keeping with the band's fun persona. Give it a listen. You won't be sorry.

White Reaper Does It Again: a raucous debut full-length from a bunch of barely 20-somethings who have more fun on a Tuesday night than you do on a Saturday. Recorded in White Reaper’s hometown of Louisville, KY, with engineer Kevin Ratterman (Young Widows, Coliseum), WRDIA is a pure rock ’n’ roll adrenaline shot: vicious guitar scratches, elastic bass, sugary keyboard leads, and a thudding drums that will inevitably give your heartbeat a new rhythm.

Brown’s conviction to authenticity led her on a journey starting in 2013. Over three years, she scrapped a full Ladyhawke album (“The material didn’t feel like me. It felt too dark or something”). Once reliant on alcohol to surmount social anxiety (“I’d never done a sober show in my life until last December”), she quit drinking and focused on getting healthy. Then she welcomed that newfound clarity by crafting her latest release, the blissed-out Wild Things.
